If you've spent a night parked off-grid with nothing but a headlamp, you already know the problem: single-point light sources cast hard shadows and drain fast. Inflatable camp lights solve both issues — they diffuse light in every direction and pack down to almost nothing. Here's what actually matters when choosing one.
What to look for
- Color temperature range. A fixed warm-white bulb is fine for ambiance but useless for reading a map or checking gear. Look for adjustable bi-color lighting (roughly 2700K–6500K) so you can switch between warm ambiance and cool task lighting.
- CRI (Color Rendering Index). A high CRI (95+) means colors look accurate under the light — useful if you're cooking, sorting gear, or just don't want everything to look washed out.
- Runtime vs. weight trade-off. Lanterns with huge battery packs are heavy. A light in the 200–250g range with 60–90 minutes at full brightness (and longer on lower settings) hits a reasonable balance for van life or overlanding, where every gram in your kit competes for space.
- Mounting options. Magnetic mounts matter more than people expect — being able to stick a light to a van's steel frame, a truck bed, or a cooler beats fumbling with a hook every time.
- IP rating / water resistance. Even under an awning, wind-driven rain happens. Splash resistance is the minimum bar.
- Charging standard. USB-C is the only sensible choice at this point — it means one cable across your whole kit instead of a drawer of proprietary chargers.
Why inflatable design specifically
An inflatable globe diffuses light 360° instead of throwing a single beam, which is why it works better than a flashlight or headlamp for actually lighting a campsite, tent interior, or cooking area. Deflated, it collapses to a fraction of its working size — a real advantage when your storage is a rear cargo box or a milk crate wedged behind the seats.
What we built into the AirGlow

FAQ
Do inflatable lights hold air well over repeated use?
A well-made one should hold shape through a full weekend without noticeable deflation. If a light needs re-inflating every few hours, that's a sign of a poor seal — worth checking reviews before buying.
Can these run all night?
Most inflatable camp lights aren't designed to run 8+ hours at full brightness — that would require a much larger (and heavier) battery. Realistic use is a few hours of active light in the evening, often on a lower or pulse mode to stretch runtime.
Are they durable enough for regular overlanding trips?
Look for IP-rated water resistance and a puncture-resistant shell rating — most are built for regular outdoor handling, not just occasional car camping, but always check the specific product's rating rather than assuming.
